HD Photography knows that pregnancy is one of the most exciting times in a woman’s life and we’re here to help you spread your good news and create lasting memories with maternity portraits! Some moms come in our studio and want to capture milestones of her belly. You can come in each month or every 3 months to capture the growth of your new belly. If you want only one maternity session then come when your belly is the biggest – thats when your 8 months along. Pregnancy is a tricky thing – don’t wait till the last minute for pictures because you might have the baby early. You are better to come earlier then later….

Maternity sessions are usually:

Mommy and her belly

Daddy with the belly

Siblings with the belly and mom

Props and accessories

wordrobe is a BIG THING!!!

Maternity sessions usually take between the 7th and 9th month of pregnancy, where the mom’s belly is usually much rounder in shape.

However, this also means that arms, legs, and face tend to swell as well, even just by walking a lot because of the excess water they are carrying around to help the baby grow and develop.

DONE WORRY ABOUT STRETCH MARKS – We are here to fix them for you. We will photoshop your stomach back to perfection if you want to be edited. We can get rid of your stretch marks or discolored belly marks, etc.. while we edit your images.

What Should You Wear?

The purpose of a maternity shoot is to show off your baby bump. It wouldn’t make sense to wear clothes that are going to mask it and make it difficult to see.

The most popular clothing item is a form-fitting dress. You may feel uncomfortable putting your belly on full display like this, but your photos will be gorgeous. You can still opt for a flowing dress — just know your photographer will most likely have you gather it and hold it close to your belly.

If a dress isn’t quite your style, just make sure to wear a tight fitting shirt. If you have any doubts, your photographer should be able to give you a list of the best items to wear.

Some mothers choose to do a maternity shoot in the nude. If you are considering this, remember to avoid spray tans and shave the day before your shoot if you usually get razor burn.

Another great tip is to avoid any clothing that can leave marks on your skin in the hours before your photo shoot. You want your body to look as natural as possible.

Tips and Tricks for Beautiful Maternity Photography

Planning your Session

  • Pick the right time. Schedule your session when you are in your seventh or eighth month of pregnancy. Your belly will have a lovely, full shape.
  • Remember, when you schedule between weeks 31 and 36 also gives you plenty of time to order additional maternity photos.
  • Bring your ultrasound with you and any baby outfits, shoes, or blocks with the baby name spelled out. We can take a very special photo of mama and baby.
  • Your maternity session could include the father and older children to reflect your beautiful growing family.
  • Showing a bare tummy can be tricky. If you wish to show your bare tummy, wear loose-fitting clothing to avoid elastic/clothing marks.
  • Avoid any glare. Apply lotion at least an hour before your session to avoid the shiny belly-look and staining your clothes.
  • If you are showing bare skin, try to moisturize your knees and elbows.
  • Hands are in important, too! Get a manicure or a light polish for a more finished look in a close up of your hands around your belly.
  • Remove tight-fitting clothing and accessories, like watches and bracelets, at least two hours before your session.
  • You may want to include a few baby things like a cute pair of shoes or a cherished family heirloom in your photo.

Style Suggestions

  • Solid colored shirts focus the attention on your tummy’s shape and glowing expression.
  • Avoid big floral prints, swirls, plaids and stripes. Large patterns distract.
  • Black clothing gives you a slim silhouette.
  • Form-fitting clothes with a little stretch will compliment your figure rather than loose clothing.
  • Long sleeves tend to be the most flattering, but sleeveless and spaghetti straps work well. Avoid t-shirt length sleeves.
  • If you want to show your bare belly, consider wearing a top and skirt or pants that won’t leave binding marks across your tummy.
  • Silk and cotton fabrics drape beautifully around a pregnant body.
  • Empire-waist blouses and dresses, button-up shirts, tank tops, long drawstring skirts and tie dresses can really enhance your blossoming shape.
  • Dark jeans and black tapering yoga pants make your legs look long and slim.
  • Don’t forget the feet. Pick your footwear depending on your clothing. If your toes are exposed in a sandal-style, you might want to get a pedicure.
  • If you choose tighter clothing, consider your undergarments with the style of clothing you choose to wear. You might not want lines showing through your clothing.
  • When choosing ways to show your style, consider a cheerful scarf, or sweater – even chunky jewelry can add fun splashes of color.

Maternity photo shoots can be a fun and creative way to make an announcement about your baby to your loved ones. By using props or other creative accessories, you can reveal that you are expecting a child, what your due date is, or the baby’s name or gender. Our in-studio professionals will help you personalize greeting cards and any other gifts to make the announcement truly special.

Incorporating a seasonal theme into your maternity portrait session can be a good way to make it fun and personal. You don’t simply have to dress like for current season, either! For example, if your portrait session is in the spring but your baby’s due date is in the fall, you could have a fall-themed photo shoot, with a saying like ‘We’re adding another pumpkin to our patch!’ There is no wrong way to go with a seasonal theme—just have fun with it!

Props can be useful when making announcements, but they are also simply fun ways to add more of your own personality to your maternity photo session. Some commonly used props are sonogram photos, outfits or a shoes for the baby, or signs and banners announcing the baby’s current age, weight, height, etc. Feel free to get creative and express yourself—this is yourmaternity portrait! `

When should I schedule my Maternity Session?
Between 32-36 weeks is the ideal timeframe for most women. This puts us in the “nice, round belly” window of opportunity, while making sure we don’t get too close to your actual due date, just in case of surprises.

Where will the Session take place?
Maternity Sessions can either be done in-home or on-location, depending on your preferences and vision. There are several outdoor locations I love to work at, or we can collaborate together to come up with the perfect spot for your needs.
In-home works great for an intimate type of session with more revealing belly shots.

Can I include my partner or other children?
Certainly! You are welcome to include immediate family members, but although other loved ones can be incorporated into your Session, I still strive to capture a fair amount of images of just you alone.

What about hair and makeup?
I recommend having hair and makeup professionally done ahead of time to ease stress and allow you to feel your best, and to have at least an hour of time in between the time you finish, and the start of our session to further relax and get mentally prepared to shine.
If you’d rather do it yourself, that’s totally okay too! If you plan to do this, simply apply your makeup as you normally would, but try to work towards a little extra coverage with foundation, blush/bronzer and mascara, as the camera can tend to wash some of your features out a little. Makeup translates a little softer on camera, which is why I recommend seeking a professional who is well-versed in what your intent is for your look so they can plan accordingly.

What do I wear?
Dress to show off that bump! Form-fitting clothing, dresses with belts to create separation between your bust and your belly, leggings paired with long tees, and flowy maxi-dresses in not-too-busy patterns all look great.
Try to keep your wardrobe seasonal, and to avoid distracting colors and prints.
